Another underrated vintage, sandwiched between two great vintages. At Raphael Mullis tasting of 1948s in Zürich in November 1998 I was amazed how good the wines still were. Cheval Blanc is the wine of the vintage (not far from its '47 and '49 in quality) closely followed by La Mission Haut Brion, other wines that are very good include Latour (better than the 47), Vieux Château Certan, Domaine de Chevalier, Léoville Barton, Canon, Clos Fourtet and Mouton. Pétrus can be fantastic but there is some bottle variation. Haut Brion, Margaux and Lafite are all quite good but living dangerously.
