Our comment on
One of the very greatest vintages ever. The wines showed an intense concentration of fruit from the start, but also masses of hard tannins. After a couple of decades in bottle quite a few ageing winelovers had given up hope for them to mellow during their lifetimes. I have had the great pleasure to drink most of the great wines from this vintage and find them very impressive. Never pleasing and charming but like the 1945s with great concentration of fruit behind the tannins. They still need some decanting-time to open up. Margaux, Léoville Las Cases, Gruaud Larose and Latour are among the greatest this vintage.
