Our comment on
A great vintage! A very hot summer brought fully ripe grapes. The wines were drinkable early on with a good concentration of fruit and lovely sweetness. Some critics doubted the ageing potential of the 59s due to their low acidity. They have been shown wrong since most well stored bottles are still a joy to drink. This is a vintage that has turned out to be a serious rival of the 1961s. All the first growths are great with only Margaux needing drinking up. Cheval Blanc, Ausone and Pétrus are all very good, though not in the class of Mouton, Lafite, Haut Brion or Latour. La Mission, Palmer, Montrose, Léoville Las Cases, Lynch Bages, Malescot and Pichon Baron are some of my other favourites in this marvellous vintage.
